Man Arrested After South Redding Shooting

A man on post release supervision was arrested early Tuesday after apparently shooting himself in the head. Redding Police Officers were called at 2AM to a home on Southgate Drive to check on two gunshot victims. They found 25-year-old Waylon John Rocha suffering from a gunshot to the head and 24-year-old Bailey Whitaker had been shot in the torso. Rocha told officers that two people had entered the residence through the garage and shot at them before fleeing on foot. A search was done, but no suspects were found. Police reviewed video surveillance that apparently conflicted with the statements that Rocha gave to officers. His story was unable to be verified and officers re-interviewed the two at Mercy Medical Center. Eventually officers say that Rocha admitted his gunshot wound was self inflicted and that the bullet accidentally struck Whitaker. Officers found a handgun at the home and Rocha was arrested after being medically cleared. He was booked into Shasta County Jail on several felony charges.
