Update: CHP Says Somes Bar Woman Found In Submerged Vehicle

Yreka-Area CHP officials say they know the identity of a person found dead inside a submerged car in the Klamath River. Just before 10 O’clock Monday morning the CHP asked for assistance from the sheriff’s office after the discovery of a 1998 Ford Explorer in the river. It had apparently left Highway 96 about 9 miles west of Happy Camp near the Community of Independence. It was upside-down about 20 feet from the bank of the river with the bottom of the SUV about 3 feet below the surface. The sheriff’s dive team helped recover the vehicle and found the body of a woman inside. The CHP says the vehicle had been traveling westbound when it lost traction, left the road and plunged into the river. An autopsy is set for this week to determine the cause of death, and to confirm the identity of the deceased, though the CHP believes the body to be that of a 34-year-old woman from the Somes Bar area.
