Woman Sentenced To Federal Prison For Stealing Mail

A woman from Red Bluff has been sentenced on federal charges involving stealing mail for the purpose of identity theft. 35-year-old Crystal Cooper and her accomplices ran the scheme from December of 2015 until her arrest in March of last year. When federal agents took her into custody she had a lot of stolen mail along with the compiled personal information of a number of Tehama and Shasta County residents. After acquiring identity and financial information from the stolen mail, Cooper and the others would use checks, credit cards and bank cards to get cash and goods. One victim had a social security account started in their name, and four cash withdrawals were made by Cooper. She had a prior conviction from 2006 for possession of other people’s mail. She pleaded guilty last June and was sentenced Tuesday to 2 years 5 months in federal prison. She could’ve gotten up to 37 years.
