Local Boy Will Be 1st Lady’s Guest For State Of The Union Speech

A local boy who has made it his mission to plant flags around the graves of military veterans will be a guest of First Lady Melania Trump at Tuesday nights State of The Union Address. 11-year-old Preston Sharp was invited to attend the event in Washington DC after gaining national attention for his quest to honor fallen veterans. On Veterans Day in 2015 the Preston went with his mother to visit his grandfather’s grave at McDonald’s Cemetery on Continental Street. Preston was appalled to see that many of the veterans’ graves had no flags or flowers to honor them. It really bothered him and he couldn’t let it go, so he decided to do something about it. He started taking on odd jobs and soliciting donations to purchase thousands of small American flags. According to White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, Preston has organized the placement of more than 40,000 American flags and red carnations on soldiers’ graves as part of his goal to honor veterans in all 50 states and to challenge others to join the flag and flower challenge.
