Plan To Revamp Mount Shasta Mall On Planning Commission’s Agenda

The Mount Shasta Mall will bring a proposal before the Redding Planning Commission Tuesday that would mean the end of Sears. The 100,000 square foot Sears department store was one of the mall’s original anchor stores when it opened in 1973. The plan is to demolish the western half of the existing Sears and rebuild 72,400 square feet of retail space, to include two medium-sized anchor stores and 4 other stores. It would also include a newly built free-standing building, part of which would be fast food with a drive-through. The city staff report favors the project as a good fit to the general plan that requires no zoning changes or major mitigation measures. It seems bound for approval and would be a death knell for the parent company of Sears, which recently announced the imminent closure of Redding’s K-Mart store, set for an early April demise. The planning commission meets Tuesday at 4 O’clock in the city council chambers. The commission will also address Redding’s proposed rules regarding the commercial cannabis industry.
