Timing Of Downtown Traffic Lights Changing Wednesday

Some longtime Redding residents think it’s neat to drive down certain streets in Downtown Redding and set the pace of their cars to the timing of the stoplights, so that they turn green just as the cars get to the limit line. It’s a dangerous practice that probably has its roots in the days when downtown streets became a “cruise” on weekend nights. Redding Police have long discouraged it, because if a red light runner comes through the intersection from a perpendicular street, it’s a recipe for a t-bone. As of Wednesday the green light pace trick will be no more, because Cal-Trans and the City of Redding are changing the configuration of downtown traffic signals. The coordinated timing will continue to be in effect Monday through Friday between 6:30AM and 8PM, when traffic is heaviest. During other times, however, 15 downtown traffic signals will operate on a “traffic actuated”, or “on demand”, format. Hopefully the word gets around among Redding’s longtime vehicular smart alecks.
