Update: Wrong-Way Driver Arrested After Major Injury Crash On I-5

A wrong-way driver on Interstate 5 early Thursday morning crashed into another car in Cottonwood. Just after 6AM a southbound 2006 Honda Accord entered Northbound Interstate Five from the Balls Ferry Road offramp in Anderson. Witnesses in Cottonwood reported seeing the car go by at about 100 miles an hour before crossing the Cottonwood Creek Bridge into Tehama County. That’s where the Honda collided with a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon driven by 33-year-old Megan McLaughlin. The Cottonwood woman suffered major injuries, including a broken leg, and she was transported to Mercy Medical Center. The Honda driver took off on foot so an area search was done. In a nearby cattle pasture 38-year-old Andrea Bates of McKinleyville was found with minor injuries to her nose and knees. After being medically cleared at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Red Bluff, Bates was booked into jail.
