Gaines Bill Would Make Crimes Against Police K9’s To Automatic Felony

A bill has been introduced by State Senator Ted Gaines that would change the way some police K9 cases are prosecuted. Under current law, injuring or killing a police K9 can be prosecuted as a misdemeanor or a felony under the discretion of the district attorney’s office. The Bill Gaines has authored would require every case involving an injured K9 to be a felony charge. The law would not apply to retired K9s, such as Tarro the retired RPD K9 that was recently poisoned by burglars.
