A school in the City of Shasta Lake was locked down due to a reported gun threat that turned out to be erroneous. At 9:30AM Wednesday morning someone called 9-1-1 to say that 18-year-old Jacob Ahern was on the campus of Mountain Lakes High School, and that he had a gun. The caller was apparently a relative of Ahern. His name caught the attention of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, because Tuesday he was accused of stealing a handgun from a family member. The school was placed on immediate lockdown, and three deputies were on campus three minutes later. They learned that Ahern was not on campus. He had been enrolled there, but that was a long time ago. The deputies did a safety sweep and the lockdown was lifted. An attempt was then made to locate Ahern and the allegedly stolen gun. Ahern learned that deputies were looking for him, so he apparently went to the gun owner’s home and gave the gun back. Deputies eventually caught up with him, questioned him, and arrested him for the alleged theft. It’s not believed that he ever went near the school or had any intention of committing any violence.
