Tehama County will participate in this Saturday’s Drug Takeback Day, sponsored nationwide by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Unwanted prescription drugs can be dropped off at three locations between 10AM and 2PM on Saturday: the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office on Antelope Boulevard, the Red Bluff Community Center on South Jackson Street and the Corning Police Department on Third Street. Shasta County no longer participates in the collection event because there are permanent prescription drug disposal kiosks installed at four locations: at the Anderson Police Station, the south side of the Redding Police Station, and at Sheriff’s Substations in Shasta Lake and Burney. Prescription medications shouldn’t be kept in the medicine cabinet because they could be taken and abused by a family member, a visitor, or a thief. More than 50% of prescription drug abusers get their supply for free from friends and family members, often by stealing them. They shouldn’t be thrown in the trash because they end up in the groundwater. They shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet because the pharmaceutical compounds can survive the water treatment process and make it into rivers, where they harm fish and other wildlife.
