Woman Sentenced For Torture, Murder Of Children

A Salinas woman has been sentenced for the torture and murder of two young children whose bodies were found in Redding. In December of 2015 the bodies of 3-year-old Delylah Tara and 6-year-old Shaun Tara were found stuffed into a plastic tote in a rented unit of an East Redding mini storage. The children had been in the custody of 42-year-old Tami Huntsman and her then-17-year-old boyfriend, Gonzalo Curiel. The children died in Salinas on Thanksgiving Day. The family had been given a free turkey dinner, but Shaun, Delylah and their 9-year-old sister were not allowed to eat any of it. Driven by hunger, the 9-year-old snuck a bagel for the three but she was caught and the three children were severely beaten and then locked in an add-on concrete box bathroom. That’s where the 9-year-old had to watch her siblings die. After traveling to Redding and leaving behind the children’s bodies, Huntsman, Curiel, and the 9-year-old stopped in Quincy, where the battered child was discovered locked in the car, her broken collarbone protruding out her skin. Huntsman and Curiel were arrested and the little girl was able to tell the horrible story to police. Huntsman would not reveal the location of the two younger children, but under intensive questioning Curiel pointed investigators to the storage unit in Redding. Huntsman avoided the death penalty by entering a guilty plea to murder and torture. She was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole or appeal. Curiel’s trial was held last month and it only took an hour for a jury to return guilty verdicts on all counts. He can’t be given a death penalty because he was only 17 when the crimes were committed. He’ll be sentenced June 29th. He’ll also get life in prison but because he was a minor the law requires that he get a parole hearing in 25 years.
