Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned Across The Redding Area

After spending this weekend barbecuing and boating and having fun, Monday may be best spent remembering the reason for the holiday. A number of memorial day ceremonies are planned for Monday and Wednesday, the true Memorial Day.

At 5:55 in the evening on Monday an event will get underway at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, with a military fly-over, music by the Foothill High School Band, the Jefferson Pipe Band and others. A U.S. Army Honor Guard team 6 colors presentation, and more. The guest speaker will be retired Rear Admiral of the Navy W.G. Jerry Ellis. The ceremony will likely wrap up around 7 O’clock.

At Redding Memorial Park on Continental Street, an event begins at 10AM Wednesday with military presentation of arms and display of honors.

The official Shasta County Veterans Memorial Day Service will take place on Wednesday at 11AM at the Veterans Memorial Grove in front of the Redding Civic Auditorium. Those who wish to lay wreaths should call 225-5616. It’ll be the 25th year that the Shasta County Veterans Affiliated Council has held a ceremony in that location. Lunch will be served following the ceremony.

The VFW will hold a ceremony at the Holcumb Cemetery in Round Mountain at 10AM Monday, followed by a BBQ picnic at the Mountain Community Center at Noon.
