Man Prosecuted Under “Project Safe Neighborhoods”

As part of a recent agreement between the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office and federal prosecutors, a case involving a felon in possession of a gun has been indicted on a federal level. On March 8th, CHP Officers and Forest Service law enforcement investigated a car that was stopped on the shoulder of Interstate Five near Sweetbriar Avenue in Castella. One of the people next to the car was 30-year-old Derek Carl Toledo of New Mexico. He has a felony conviction for arson and therefore can’t have any guns. In the car officers reported finding a DPMS A-15 .223 caliber rifle, all the components for a Bushmaster 50 caliber rifle and three loaded 30 round magazines. A federal grand jury returned an indictment Thursday as part of the “Project Safe Neighborhoods”. If convicted Toledo could get 10 years in federal prison and a Quarter-Million Dollar fine.
