Sheriff’s Office Cracking Down On Boating Under The Influence

Not surprisingly, alcohol is the leading factor nationwide in boating accidents, and it was a contributing factor in 31% of California boating fatalities over the past 5 years. That’s what is prompting the Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit to launch “Operation Dry Water” this weekend on Lake Shasta. Although open containers of alcohol are allowed on boats, even in the drivers hand, the law concerning boating under the influence are the same as driving under the influence. The .08 restriction also applies to waterskiers. Friday through Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office will increase patrols and perform BUI checkpoints on the lake to try to get some of the drunks off the water and make it safer for everybody else.
