A fire that started southeast of Douglas City Thursday is giving firefighters a lot of trouble as they try to battle the difficult-to-access blaze on steep terrain with very heavy fuels. The fire near Blanchard Flat Road and Reading Creek Road is being called the “Flat Fire”. At last word it had burned more than 300 acres of heavy timber with zero containment. A very large air tanker was requested and it came through in the form of a 747 wide body jet converted for use as a tanker. It has joined 3 other air tankers, 7 helicopters, 20 water tenders, 68 engine companies, 10 bulldozers and an overall total of 934 personnel working the fire.
