A fire that started southeast of Douglas City last Thursday is giving firefighters a lot of trouble as they try to battle the difficult-to-access blaze on steep terrain with very heavy fuels. The Flat Fire is burning in extremely rugged and steep terrain and at last word it had burned more than 300 acres of heavy timber with 50% containment. The northeast end of the fire is particularly challenging for crews, but crews are making good progress and the demobilization process for resources has begun. A very large air tanker was requested last week and it came through in the form of a 747 wide body jet converted for use as a tanker.
