The Latest: Carmichael Pilot Killed In Crash Near Tahoe

TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) – Authorities have identified the 60-year-old pilot from suburban Sacramento who died in a small airplane crash near Lake Tahoe. The Placer County sheriff says Kenneth Whittall-Scherfee of Carmichael was killed in Tuesday morning’s crash south of Truckee that also claimed the life of one passenger and critically injured another. The sheriff’s office says Whittall-Scherfee also owned the single-engine plane that went down about 7:40 a.m. along State Route 267 near the Northstar ski resort. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the pilot reported engine trouble shortly after takeoff and was trying to return to the Truckee-Tahoe Airport when the crash occurred. The names of the two passengers have not been released.
