Driver Arrested For Felony DUI After Crashing Into Rock Wall

A Redding man on probation for DUI allegedly tried to leave after crashing a car while drunk early Thursday morning. A little before 2AM, a 1996 Honda Accord was southbound on Alta Mesa Drive. When it reached the end of Alta Mesa at Rancho Road the car kept going through the stopsign and smashed into a rock wall in front of a house across the street. When Redding Police arrived a passenger, 19-year-old Dena Bommarito, was found to have minor injuries and she was transported to Mercy Hospital. A short distance from the crash scene, officers detained 24-year-old Joseph Sharpe, who was walking away. He’s on probation for a previous DUI and has a suspended driver’s license. He reportedly gave officers false information, denied being the driver, and threatened to physically harm one of the officers. Witnesses, including Bommarito, identified Sharpe as the driver. He was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and cannabis, and he was booked into jail for felony DUI causing injury, felony hit and run, threatening an officer, and several other charges.
