The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a man who was shot by Redding Police on Monday morning near Downtown Redding. The sheriff’s office says that 32-year-old Masa Nathaniel Warden of Las Vegas is a violent fugitive and had an active warrant out for his arrest. About 6AM police were called to Shasta High School after a staff member was violently attacked. The suspect was gone before officers arrived. At about 8:30AM the residents of an apartment in the 200 block of Overhill Drive reported a burglary. Inside officers found a pair of swim goggles that matched a pair that the man was wearing during the assault at Shasta High School. Officers received word that a suspicious man matching the description of the suspect was seen near the river trail. About 9:50AM an officer located the suspect in the 600 block of Mary Street. He was uncooperative and ignored the officers commands. The suspect than motioned his hands as is he was preparing to pull a gun. The officer radioed that he thought the suspect had a gun in his waistband. The officer ordered the man to show his hands, but the man failed to comply. The officer than shot one round at the suspect, who fell to the ground. He continued to reach for his waistband. By than 2 other officers arrived and they fired on the suspect. A search was done and no weapon was found. The suspect was identified as Masa Warden and officers rendered live saving first aid before Warden was taken to Mercy for treatment of his gunshot wounds. He is expected to survive. Warden is on parole for kidnapping, battery and for resisting arrest. the sheriff’s office says Warden’s parole information says he is a known gang member and a narcotics user with violent tendencies. He had just arrived in Redding after meeting a prostitute in Las Vegas who brought him to Shasta County. Warden now faces felony charges for residential burglary, making criminal threats and battery on a school official. He will be booked into the Shasta County Jail once he is released from the hospital. The sheriff’s office says investigators have obtained video and eye witness accounts of the incident and the officers actions and they are analyzing the information.
