Carr Fire Grows, New Evacuations Issued

The Carr Fire that’s been burning in the Whiskeytown Area is heading east rapidly and fire activity has increased at an alarming rate. The fire is threatening nearly 200 structures and sheriffs deputies have been going door to door for the Rock Creek Road and Benson Road Areas. Spot fires forced the evacuation of the Swasey Drive Area and Lower Springs Road Area and the Victoria Road Area. Mandatory evacuations were issued very early this morning for the entire town of Keswick and much of the Old Shasta Area, including Iron Mountain Road, Middle Creek Road, Mule Town Road and all roads that lead from them. The Carr Fire has grown to 20,000 acres and just 10% contained. The fire has burned down to Whiskeytown Lake, but the visitors center remains standing. At least one home on South Fork Mountain and Benson Road in Old Shasta has been destroyed. An unknown number of other homes may have been damaged. Crews fighting the fire from the air are being hampered by the smokey conditions. Residents on Benson Road, Rock Creek Road, Iron Mountain Road, Middle Creek Road, Mule Town Road, Swasey Drive, Lower Springs Road are under mandatory evacuation orders. The evacuation center is Shasta High School. Highway 299 is closed at Buenaventura Boulevard. No evacuation orders have been issued for residents living in the City of Redding. Quartz Hill Road and Keswick Dam Road are also closed. The latest information will be posted to the KQMS Facebook page.
