Redding Police Chief Roger Moore says anyone caught in an evacuated area can be charged with a crime and arrested, even if they live there. Any victim of theft should prepare an itemized list of their missing items and make a report to the RPD. Because of limited resources and a large volume of cases, it may be days before an officer is able to contact the victim for follow up. Shasta County District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett says her office will aggressively prosecute all looting cases. At Monday’s community meeting Bridgett said looting will be considered priority cases and they’ll push for maximum sentences. She also said her office’s consumer protection unit has gotten dozens of complaints about price gouging. That’s defined as raising prices more 10% following an emergency declaration. It’s a misdemeanor crime punishable by a year in jail and a $10,000 fine plus another $5,000 for each violation. Consumers can report potential price gouging to the DA’s office at 225-5391.
