Firefighters Make Gains

The best thing about an update on the Carr Fire released by CalFire Wednesday afternoon is that the numbers were basically unchanged from the morning. The Carr Fire has burned 115,538 acres. Containment is still at 35%. 1018 homes have been lost, along with 12 commercial structures and 435 outbuildings. Hundreds of other homes and buildings have been damaged and 2,546 structures are still considered threatened. Evacuation orders have been lifted from many areas. A repopulation of some of the Mary Lake Subdivision on Wednesday was interrupted by the discovery of a butane honey oil lab. All the lifted evacuations can be found on the KQMS Facebook page. There’s also a new website available at tinyurl.com/carrfirerepopulationmap . Officials are optimistic, saying containment on the southeastern flank is very strong now and crews are shoring up containment on the rest of the fire’s edge by constructing indirect dozer lines to back up the direct dozer lines. Most fire activity is now on the northwest, where the fire is burning about 3 or 4 miles from Lewiston and there’s been some slopover along County Line Road. The public is invited to attend a community meeting at the Redding Civic Auditorium at 4 o’clock Thursday afternoon.
