Weather Helps Crews Battling Hirz Fire Near Lake Shasta

Crews are continuing to battle the Hirz Fire which has grown to 17,467 acres. Monday night the fire was active on the north east side of the fire. The Forest Service is reporting that crews made excellent progress on the southern side near Old Mill Road. Crews are continuing to strengthen containment lines and protecting structures in the area. Most of the fires spread is through rolling debris. Crews will be watching the weather Tuesday and with lower temperatures forecast they hope to make more progress. Heavy smoke is expected in the I-5 corridor. No new evacuations have been issued. The McCloud River arm of the lake is closed just above Holiday Harbor. A number of recreation sites are closed as well including Hirz Bay, Moore Creek, Pine Point, Ellery Creek, Dekkas Rock, and the McCloud Bridge.
