Smoke Likely To Drift Into Redding From Hirz Fire

Crews working the Hirz Fire near Shasta Lake will be continuing back burning operations as conditions allow. Tuesday night the fire burned back down the ridge on the northeast side of the fire. The back burns will be on the western front of the fire and crews will be patrolling the fires southern edge. The fire is active along the western front from Bucks Peak north along Middle Salt Creek and on the northern edge of Nawtawaket Mountain. The fire is currently spreading mostly through rolling debris with some slope driven runs. The fire has grown to 18,814 acres and is 17% contained. Heavy smoke is being pushed into the valley. No new evacuations have been issued but a number of camp sites and recreation areas are closed. For information on closures call the Shasta Lake Ranger District at 275-1587. A public meeting will be held Wednesday evening in Lakehead at the Lions Club at 6PM.
