Driver Sentenced To 8 Years In Prison For DUI Crash

A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for a head-on DUI crash in Redding from 3-and-a-half years ago. At around 8AM on April 16th of 2015 the 23-year-old victim, Sarah Hewitt, was heading to work in her Kia sedan. She was driving southbound on Court Street just south of the Diestelhorst Bridge when a GMC pickup driven by Kelly Patrick O’Bryan came barreling down the hill, crossed the center line, and rammed head-on into Hewitt’s Kia. Just a few minutes earlier a driver on Highway 44 had called the CHP with O’Bryan’s license plate number to report him driving recklessly and possibly drunk. Hewitt suffered major injuries, especially to her legs, from which still has not recovered. O’Bryan, who was under the influence of drugs, had a previous DUI arrest in Redding in 2007, in North Carolina in 2013, and in Red Bluff in 2014. He was on probation from the most recent one and his truck had a ignition interlock device. He’s been given the maximum sentence of 7 years in prison, of which he must serve at least 85% before being paroled.
