Former CHP Officer Sentenced To 364 Days

A former CHP Officer who had been accused of beating up his girlfriend but avoided charges involving lewd acts on a child has been sentenced after a plea deal. Matthew James Schmidt was arrested in 2016 for domestic violence after his girlfriend said he punched he four times in the face. She later said she had fallen down some stairs. Schmidt was a California Highway Patrol Officer in Modoc County at the time, and was a resident of Palo Cedro. He also had been accused of groping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl at her Alturas home in 2013. Last month Schmidt’s trial was about to begin when he entered guilty pleas to felony domestic violence, misdemeanor battery, and violation of a court order to stay away from the victim. He was remanded into custody without bail at the time pending Monday’s sentencing. He’s been given 364 days in Shasta County Jail.
