Investigators Seek Witnesses After Infants Suspicious Death

Redding Police are seeking witnesses following the suspicious death of a baby. On Tuesday of last week an 11-month-old boy was taken to Mercy Medical Center suffering seizures from an apparent head injury. He was soon flown to U.C. Davis Medical Center as his condition became worse. Officers made contact with the parents, Brittney and Clyde Coffelt, who live at 2727 Lanning Avenue apartment “A”. They had called an ambulance to take the baby at 11:15AM that day because of his seizures. The statements they made to police were suspicious and inconsistent. The Coffelts also have a 2-year-old, who was taken into custody by children’s services. The Coffelts had arrived in Redding from Oklahoma two days before the birth of their 2-year-old. Between them they have a total of 8 children, all of whom have been taken by children’s services for various reasons over the years in the different states where they’ve lived. A search warrant was served at the apartment on Wednesday. Officers gathered evidence and said the place was deplorable, filthy and teeming with cockroaches. The baby died Thursday night. Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy. In the meantime they’d like to hear from the Coffelts’ neighbors or any other witnesses who can offer some insight into the tragedy.
