Cold Case Murder Suspects Ordered To Stand Trial

Three people will stand trial for a Shasta County murder committed 25 years ago. 20-year-old Frank McAlister was robbed and murdered in 1993. The case remained unsolved until January of this year, when 44-year-old Brian Hawkins requested an interview with KRCR TV, saying his faith in god led him to do the right thing. He said living with the secret had been “absolutely horrible” and he said he wanted people to know he was remorseful. After the interview, Hawkins went to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office to meet with investigators. He also fingered two accomplices, 45-year-old Curtis Culver and Culver’s sister, 42-year-old Shanna Culver. She was only 17 at the time so she had to first go through juvenile court proceedings before the case could proceed. She, her brother and Hawkins had a preliminary hearing Thursday and were ordered to stand trial for murder, robbery and special allegations of lying in wait and committing murder in the commission of a robbery. The three will return to court November 13th, when trial dates will be set.
