Update: 6th Fatality Reported From Butte County Wildfire

6 people have been killed by the huge fire ripping through Butte County. The Butte County Sheriffs Office says 5 of the victims were killed when their cars were overrun by fire near Edgewood Lane in Paradise. The 6th fatality was reported just before 4PM Friday. The body was found in Paradise, but the sheriff’s office hasn’t released any information. The Camp Fire is now estimated at 70,000 acres with just 5% containment. Much of Paradise is in ruins from the fire that’s threatening the eastern edge of Chico and moving northeast toward Plumas County although evacuations for the City of Chico were lifted Friday afternoon. The Camp Fire just started around 6:30AM Thursday morning east of Paradise along highway 70. By midday it had forced the evacuation of around 30,000 people, including the entire Town of Paradise, in addition to Magalia, Concow, Butte Creek Canyon and Butte Valley. Losses in the City of Paradise are devastating, with around 2000 structures destroyed many businesses and an unknown number of homes. Despite early reports, the high school and most of Feather River Hospital were spared. All schools were closed today in Butte County, including Butte College and Chico State. Most government functions are also closed. Mutual aid has poured into Butte County from countless other agencies. 15,000 structures remain threatened. Around 2300 fire personnel are on the job.
