Coroner ID’s Man Killed In Fiery Crash On Highway 299

The name has been released of a man who died in a fiery crash a couple of weeks ago west of Weaverville. The afternoon of October 29th, someone called Trinity County 9-1-1 to say an unstable person had left in a vehicle. It’s not clear who made the call or from where, but 12 minutes later a car left Highway 299 near the Oregon Mountain Summit and tumbled about 200 feet down the steep embankment before coming to rest and catching fire. The resulting vegetation fire engulfed the vehicle and burned the driver beyond recognition. After an autopsy, dental records confirmed the identity as 29-year-old Michael J. Gearhart.
