Attorney Convicted Of Dissuading Witness

A Tehama County attorney has pled guilty to charges of dissuading a witness from testifying. Both counts are serious felonies and are considered strikes. 50-year-old Roland Bennett of Corning was representing a defendant charged with assault causing great bodily injury, among other things. Between September 2016 and November 2017, Bennett contacted the victim in the case several times and negotiated a deal in which the defendant would pay the victim to not cooperate with the prosecution, and would refuse to testify. At the time he committed these crimes, Bennett was on probation for DUI. On Thursday Bennett was given the maximum sentence of 3 years 8 months in prison, but the sentence is suspended in lieu of 5 years probation and 300 days in county jail.
