Shasta High Graduates Killed In Ethiopian Airlines Crash

Two brothers from Redding were among the passengers on an Ethiopian Airlines jet that crashed just outside Addis Ababa Sunday morning. All 157 passengers and crew were killed in the crash. There were passengers from a total of 35 countries on the Boeing 737 Max 8, and a number of the dead had worked for humanitarian organizations. Among the victims were Melvin and Bennett Riffel of Redding. The men had been on vacation in Australia before heading to Africa. Melvin’s wife is pregnant with the couple’s little girl, due this spring. She had been with the brothers on their vacation, but had returned home to Redding as they continued on. Melvin graduated form Shasta High School in 2007 and worked for Cal-Trans. Bennett graduated in 2010. A prayer service was held for Melvin and Bennett at Saint Joseph Catholic Church at Tuesday morning.
