Update: Attorney Arrested After Attacking Family With Splitting Maul

A Redding attorney is accused of attacking his family with a splitting maul, leaving his wife in critical condition. 73-year-old Theodore Loos has been booked into Shasta County Jail on nine felony charges, including 3 counts of attempted murder. Loos is an attorney for the Shasta County Public Defender’s Office. Redding Police were called to a home on Galway Street just before 8 O’clock Wednesday morning by a child reporting that her father had struck her mother with an axe. She said that she and her brother were also attacked, and her father was currently trying to stab himself with a knife. Officers arrived and detained Loos without incident. His son said he awoke to Loos standing in the doorway of his bedroom holding a splitting maul. He said Loos tried to hit him with the blunt end of the maul, but he dodged the blow and suffered only minor injuries. The girl said she woke up to her brother screaming and saw her father attacking him. When she screamed at him to stop, he apparently turned on her and struck her in the head with the blunt end of the axe. Both children took refuge in their mother’s room and found her suffering from massive wounds to her head and face. Loos came in the room and the girl ran to a neighbor’s house to call for help. The boy stayed behind and disarmed his father. The children both sustained minor injuries but their mother suffered life threatening injuries requiring surgery. She’s in critical condition.
