Forest Service Allowing Lightning Sparked Fire To Burn To Reduce Future Wildfire Risk

A lightning-caused fire burning west of Red Bluff continues to creep as the Forest Service keeps it confined and allows it to take a mostly natural course. The East Fire currently poses no threat to anything. It’s burned 405 acres and is 30% contained. It was spotted last Monday afternoon in the Yolla Bolly Wilderness Area of the Mendocino National Forest about 43 miles west of Red Bluff. It’s burning in an area of snags and brush in the footprint of the 2008 Yellow Fire, and is serving to remove hazardous fuels and decrease the probability for high severity wildfires in the area in the future.
