Fire Officials Warn Of Dangers Of “Safe & Sane” Fireworks

With Independence Day next week, local fire officials are reminding Shasta County residents that fireworks can and do cause fires and all fireworks are illegal in the county. The Redding Fire Department demonstrated the dangers Tuesday behind station 8. Several different types, including so-called “Safe and Sane” fireworks were set off, which quickly ignited the semi-dry vegetation in the area, even though the humidity was above 30 percent. With warmer temperatures and lower humidity expected next week, the danger will only increase by the Fourth of July. Redding Fire Marshal Craig Wittner also noted that anyone starting a fire with fireworks is liable for any damage caused. On Monday, $500 worth of illegal fireworks was confiscated at Lake Shasta.
