Investigators Say West Redding Fire Originated In A Homeless Camp

Redding Fire Department took quick action on a vegetation fire in West Redding Friday. Crews responded at around 12:15PM to a wooded area near Teton Drive south of Placer and west of Buenaventura. On arrival the fire was covering about three quarters of an acre of thick brush and trees, with a moderate rate of spread. Firefighters made access via some undeveloped dirt roads and the Blue Gravel Mine Walking Trail. By the time they got it surrounded the fire had burned about one and a half acres. Fire Marshal Craig Wittner says the blaze is believed to have originated in a homeless camp. Witnesses reported seeing people flee shortly before the fire became visible to the surrounding area.
