RPD: Woman Arrested For DUI After High Speed Crash

A Shasta Lake woman had her 5-year-old son in her lap and was letting him steer as she careened through Downtown Redding, according to police. At 10:30PM Saturday night, witnesses say a Nissan Versa driven by 24-year-old Katelyn Miles was going 80 miles an hour westbound on Placer Street before it turned onto Pine Street and smashed into a Honda accord driven by 41-year-old Brian Thomas. Both cars then left the road and took out a Cal-Trans power box for the stoplights. Neither Katelyn nor the 5-year-old were wearing seatbelts but incredibly, nobody was injured. Police say that right after the crash, a friend of Katelyn’s happened along and she handed her son to her friend and fled. She later returned and cooperated, apparently telling officers she had been using Heroin and Methamphetamine shortly before the crash. She was booked for driving under the influence of drugs, hit and run and child endangerment.
