Supervisors Approve Asking Voters For Sales Tax Increase

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors has set the ball rolling on asking voters to approve a potential county-wide sales tax. The specific transactions and use tax would be earmarked for law enforcement and jail beds, seeking to eliminate the impression that a revolving door at the Shasta County Jail provides inadequate disincentive for criminals. A specific tax requires a 2-thirds approval from voters. The City of Redding has attempted to pass public safety sales tax measures twice in the past decade, but failed. There’s a general agreement among the Board of Supervisors that the key to the success of such a proposal is a very clear plan that provides transparency and therefore fosters trust among voters. Tuesday’s vote approved the draft language of the proposed ordinance, which may be presented to voters in March of next year.
