Construction has finally begun on the new home of the Riverfront Playhouse in Redding. The 11,500 square foot building is at 1950 California Street, a former sports medicine facility. Renovations include the removal of an indoor swimming pool. The theater will seat 152 audience members, and will include a set construction shop, a well-appointed green room, an art gallery, an events room with a concessions stand, and a small black box theater for experimental productions. Naming opportunities, personalized bricks and seat nameplates are available for purchase as the theater company pushes hard for continued fundraising. A ground breaking ceremony will take place in the next few weeks. For it’s first 39 years the theater has occupied a incongruous space in an industrial style steel building off East Cypress Avenue.
