Shasta County is ranked 2nd in the state for the number of pain pill shipments per person. A new report reveals the number of pain pills each U.S. county received over a six-year period. The Washington Post reported numbers from the Drug Enforcement Administration from 2006 to 2012. In Shasta County, more than 217 Million pills were received. That equates to 94 pills per person each year, which is higher per capita than any of the nearby counties of Tehama, Trinity, Siskiyou or Butte. It’s also more than 4 times the number of pills per person in Los Angeles County. The only area with a higher number of pills per person was Lake County with 97. Statewide, more than 8 Billion prescription pain pills were supplied during that period.
