Shasta County DA Challenges Newsom’s Clemency For Convicted Killer

The Shasta County D.A.’s Office is crying fowl over an action by Governor Newsom. They say only 21 days were given to oppose clemency by the district attorney’s office, sheriff’s office and surviving family members before Newson granted clemency to a convicted murderer. Last Friday, the governor granted clemency to Theodore Gray. Normally, 90 days is given to respond when those convicted of life sentences are up for parole, and 30 days to respond when serious offenders are up for early release under proposition 57. Yet only 21 days (12 business days) was given in Gray’s clemency case. Gray pleaded guilty in the brutal murder of Vincent Fontecchio that occurred in 1999 and received a 40 years to life sentence. The decision by Newson converts Gray’s 40 years to life sentence to 25 years to life. After proposition 57, the 25 years to life sentence becomes 20 years to life. Gray has served 20 years already and is therefore now eligible to receive a parole date. D.A. Stephanie Bridget prosecuted the case and is challenging Newsom’s action.
