Redding Police and Fire Departments are both getting into the pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As part of the campaign, an RPD patrol Interceptor car and an RPD Harley-Davidson motorcycle are sporting pink, and they’re joined by a big pink Redding Fire engine. Police Chief Bill Schueller says it’s an effort his department is proud to support, and in previous years there hasn’t been a problem with the pink vehicles being taken seriously by the public. Redding Fire Chief Cullen Kreider also is not concerned about anyone thinking its anything but a bona fide emergency vehicle. The vinyl wraps are temporary and can be peeled off at the end of the month. They were professionally done by Signarama, which offered the materials and labor for free at no cost to the city. On October 18th the Sundial Bridge will be lit up pink as part of a Think Pink Festival. The RPD pink Interceptor will be there and cancer survivors will be invited to actually use pens to write on the hood and rear fenders of the vehicle. Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer and will affect one in 8 women. However it’s also one of the most treatable and with early detection it has a survival rate of around 98%.
