I-5 Traffic Backed Up After Crash

Traffic backed up on southbound Interstate Five south of Redding Sunday after a big rig overturned very close to where another big rig overturned last week. The tanker hauling diesel exhaust fluid crashed at 8:30 AM just north of the Smith Road overcrossing. The driver was not injured. The fast lane of the freeway remained open for through traffic but the slow lane was blocked for about 5 hours. Two hours after the crash, traffic was still snarled enough that some drivers were going in reverse on the South Bonnyview Road onramp, creating treacherous conditions for other drivers. Yet another rollover crash in almost the same place blocked traffic in the middle of the night. Just before midnight, a car overturned on southbound I-5 near Knighton Road. Witnesses say the driver was going very fast before veering into the center divider wall. The driver suffered minor injuries and the wreck was cleared by 12:35.
