Goats Being Utilized At West Redding Fuels Reduction Project

A low-tech vegetation management project is munching its way through some dry weeds in West Redding. On a hillside next to Buenaventura Boulevard between Summit and Starlight there are more than 500 goats doing what they do best. Redding Fire Department has contracted with Blue Tent Farms of Red Bluff. The goats were delivered Monday and they got right to work. The hillside has long been a problem for frequent fires, some caused by discarded cigarettes and some by disintegrating catalytic convertors, which spew hot metal out of tailpipes as cars are revving up the grade on that stretch of road. People are welcome to observe the goats by walking down the Blue Gravel Mine Trail. A temporary fence around the goats is electrified, and dogs are on duty to protect them as well. In about a month, the goats will likely mow through the entire 33 acres.
