Update: CHP Officer Suffers Punctured Lung After Big Rig Hits Patrol Vehicle

A Trinity County CHP Officer suffered major injuries when his patrol car was hit by a logging truck. At around 2 O’clock Monday afternoon, 46-year-old officer Scott Merryman was working speed enforcement on Highway 299, east of Power House Road. He was traveling eastbound when he spotted a speeder going the opposite direction and tried to make a quick U-turn to make a traffic stop. His patrol car was hit on the driver’s side by a loaded logging truck that had been behind him. Merryman was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Redding with broken ribs and a punctured lung. The truck driver, 72-year-old Larry Benner of Anderson, complained of knee pain. The collision is being investigated by the CHP Northern Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
