17-Year-Old Stabbing Suspect May Be Tried As An Adult

A teenager who’s charged with stabbing a man to death will probably face trial as an adult. The boy, who is now 17, has been identified as Michael Hastey. He was 16 at the time of the incident. He’s accused of the January 8th stabbing death of 28-year-old Nathan Purdue, reportedly because he thought Purdue was making advances towards his girlfriend. According to the Trinity Journal, Detective Josh Ford testified about the interactions between Hastey, Hastey’s 17-year-old girlfriend, and Perdue leading up to the stabbing. Ford talked to the girlfriend, who said she and Hastey were at Hastey’s residence in Weaverville when she told him she had kissed Perdue, who asked her to call him if things didn’t work out with Hastey. Upon hearing that, Hastey got upset. Ford said Hastey told him he’d grabbed a knife and stormed out of the house with the intention of killing Purdue. At a hearing this week, Judge Eric Heryford said all of the criteria to move the case to adult court have been met. The decision is subject to appeal.
