Shasta County Inmate Serving Life Sentence Accused Of Murder

A state prison inmate from Shasta County is accused of murdering a fellow prisoner. Officials at California State Prison Sacramento say they saw Stephen Dunckhurst and another inmate attack a third man in the general population yard at 2:45PM Monday afternoon. All inmates in the yard were ordered to the ground, but the attackers ignored the orders until guards used pepper spray and blast grenades. The injured inmate was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later. Two inmate-manufactured weapons were apparently found at the scene of the attack. Dunckhurst is a third-striker serving a life sentence for a Shasta County vehicle theft in 2005. He had another 6 years added on that same year for manufacturing a weapon. Another life sentence was tacked on in 2010 after an attack on another inmate. In 2011 he got another 2 years 8 months for resisting an officer and removing the officer’s weapon. Dunckhurst and the other attacker are segregated as the investigation is underway.
