Council To Discuss REU’s 10 Year Wildfire Plan

The wildfire mitigation plan for Redding Electric Utility will be considered by the city council at Tuesday night’s meeting. State Senate Bill 901 requires the creation of such a plan for any utility with electrical lines running through high-risk areas. There are four parts to the REU plan, including the labor intensive “wildfire prevention” aspect which involves vegetation management and improved fire staffing, with an annual cost of $2 Million. The emergency operations aspect would be a couple hundred thousand for a backup generator and communications equipment. The distribution capitol improvement part mostly involves moving existing funds around to use them more appropriately. The part of the plan that may raise some eyebrows is the technology solutions program, which would be a communications platform for the benefit of the fire and police departments, with an initial cost of $12 Million in its first year. The 10 year price tag for the entire plan is $38 Million. Al the details can be found through the city’s online portal.
