California’s Gov. Newsom Had “Baptism By Fire” In 1st Year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Wildfires, power blackouts and the bankruptcy of California’s largest utility dominated Gov. Gavin Newsom’s first year leading the nation’s most populous state. State Senate leader Toni Atkins described it as “baptism by fire” for the former San Francisco mayor. Pacific Gas & Electric filed for bankruptcy weeks after Newsom was sworn in and he spent most of the year dealing with the consequences. When that wasn’t taking up his time, the Democratic governor regularly sparred with Republican President Donald Trump and advanced progressive policies at a frenetic pace. But he’s been unable to make a tangible dent in the state’s housing and homelessness crisis.
