Redding Police have re-opened a cold murder case from more than 4 decades ago. On July 7th of 1976, the body of 15-year-old Terri Lynn Ray was found with multiple stab wounds near the Highway 273 bridge over Clear Creek. At the time, investigators arrested an 18-year-old girl on suspicion of the murder after she confessed under hypnosis. The girl was later freed from Shasta County Jail after a judge threw out the hypnosis-induced confession and police learned she had an alibiIi. Investigators tried other leads but were met with frustration and the case went nowhere. In 2013, police said they developed new leads and were actively investigating the case again, hoping that advances in DNA technology would allow the identification of a suspect. Several pieces of evidence were sent to the state Department of Justice DNA lab, but apparently that did not pan out. Investigators are again looking into the case and appealing to the public.
